Computer Vision for Surgery and Disease Analysis
Over the past few decades, computer vision techniques have played an
increasing role in the practice of medicine. Segmentation methods that
incorporate shape, appearance and atlas information provide detailed
3D reconstructions of patient-specific anatomy. Flexible registration
methods align segmented models with patients for surgical planning and
intra-operative guidance. Related registration methods align
populations of images to support isolation of disease specific
changes, as well as temporal evolution of those changes. We will
review recent advances in these and related areas, highlighting the
impact of computer vision methods in emerging medical practice.

About our Speaker:
Eric Grimson is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and holds the Bernard Gordon
Chair of Medical Engineering at MIT. He also holds a joint appointment
as a Lecturer on Radiology at Harvard Medical School and at Brigham
and Women's Hospital. Prof. Grimson has previously served as the
Education Officer for the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science at MIT, and as Associate Department Head. Since 2005, he has
been serving as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering
and Computer Science. He received a B.Sc. (High Honors) in Mathematics
and Physics from the University of Regina in 1975 and a Ph.D. in
Mathematics from MIT in 1980. Prof. Grimson is a member of MIT's
Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and his group
has pioneered state of the art systems for activity and behavior
recognition, object and person recognition, image database indexing,
image guided surgery, site modeling and many other areas of computer
vision. Prof. Grimson is a Fellow of the Association for the
Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a Fellow of the IEEE,
and was awarded the Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching in the
School of Engineering at MIT.

In the past these activities have included Girl Scout workshops, "Wow! That's Engineering!" workshops, science fair judging, merit certificate presentations, speakers bureau, job shadowing, and special events like Engineer's Week.

If you are interested in participating in any of the outreach programs for next year, please attend this meeting. This is a great way to get more involved with SWE-Boston, make new friends and professional contacts, and share your passion for engineering.

Future City Competition

Future City Competition

Future City is a competition that urges middle school students to dig deep into their imaginations and create a dream world, and then switch hats to show the world that through innovative technology and engineering, their dream world is possible. The students initially create their world using Sim City 4 software and then build a scale model of a section of their city using recycled products. The students prepare a presentation and brainstorm answers to any question people might ask about their creation. In addition, students are asked to answer an essay question typically aimed at encouraging them to think of a way to make the world a better place. This year, they are asked to develop a conceptual cure to a major world disease.

It starts up around now (though most schools don't start until the fall), winds up the weekend after MLK Day regionally and one team goes to the finals in Washington DC. Last year, the winners met the President. The winners also get to go to Space Camp.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Denise Griffin at denisegri@alumni.tufts.edu for details.

Electronic Body Language

www.sweboston.org
Analog Devices, Inc., Corporate Headquarters
Building Three, Three Technology Way,Norwood, MA

Technology makes amazing things possible; it also presents challenges, especially in the areas where it replaces face-to-face communication. The ability to accurately interpret behaviors using technological communications is becoming an essential skill for those working in the virtual arena. The opportunities for misunderstandings are immense.

What assumptions do we make about someone who doesn't reply to an email, or who doesn't capitalize or spell check an email?

What does it say about someone who shouts into a speakerphone during a teleconference meeting?

What happens to our confidence in a leader who can't facilitate a meeting well?

Does knowing highly personal information posted on Facebook about a colleague impact how you work together or your expectations about what that person can accomplish?

The challenge becomes navigating types of distance - geographic, generational, cultural, functional, etc. – to 'hear' the message as intended.

Electronic Body Language is about out virtual presence, and the assumptions we make about others based on their electronic habits.

During this presentation we will:

highlight different individual interpretations and assumptions

learn strategies for aligning in person and electronic persona

review types of distance in the virtual arena

learn tips for bridging distance and enhancing overall virtual effectiveness
